Stand Your Ground Without Losing Yourself.

Why nervous system skills may be the missing link in health, communication, and resilience

Most people know the moment, even if they do not have language for it: the moment they lose themselves, even if only on the inside.You are in a conversation at home, at work, in a meeting, or standing in line at the grocery store, and something locks up. Not in the content. In you.Your chest tightens. Your thinking narrows. Your tone sharpens, or you disappear entirely. You say something you did not mean to say, or you shut down and say nothing at all.Later, you replay it.That is not who I wanted to be.We tend to interpret moments like this as failures of communication, willpower, or emotional maturity.Often, they are not.They are physiological. They are nervous system events.

The system underneath everything

Over more than two decades in clinical practice, I have worked with people navigating very different concerns: menopause symptoms, fertility challenges, chronic pain, sports injuries, anxiety, depression, and the effects of sustained stress in first responders.On the surface, these look like different and unrelated problems.Underneath, a pattern often repeats.The body gets stuck in activation, what we might call survival mode. When that happens, resources are reallocated in ways that may help in an emergency but do not serve long-term wellbeing. Sleep becomes less restorative. Pain sensitivity can increase. Emotions intensify. Attention narrows. Communication narrows with it. Chronic stress and autonomic dysregulation are associated with broad physical, psychological, and behavioral effects, and interventions aimed at autonomic regulation have shown benefits for stress, anxiety, and broader health outcomes.This is not dysfunction in the simplest sense.It is adaptation.The problem is not that the body enters survival mode. The problem is that many people no longer know how to come out of it.That matters because health and behavior are not as separate as we often pretend. A system that is braced, vigilant, or collapsing does not only affect mood. It changes sleep, recovery, pain tolerance, attention, and relationship quality. Research on self-awareness, vagal tone, and emotional regulation points in this direction, linking bodily regulation with mental health, wellbeing, and chronic conditions.

Why this matters now

Modern life does not always look dangerous, but the body does not measure danger the way the thinking mind does.Constant input. Time pressure. Fragmented attention. Social friction. Unresolved decisions.The system reads all of it as load.Many people are functioning. Many are high-performing. But underneath that is a baseline tension that never fully discharges.You can see it in the details: sleep that does not restore, reactivity that surprises you, difficulty focusing under pressure, conversations that escalate or collapse.These are not separate issues.They are often expressions of the same underlying condition: a system under load.

Communication begins in the body

We like to think of communication as a cognitive skill. Say the right words. Stay calm. Listen better.But communication does not begin in the mind. It begins in the body.When the nervous system is regulated, we have greater access to perspective, patience, timing, and choice. When it is not, those capacities narrow or disappear.We interrupt.We defend.We withdraw.We escalate.Not because we lack character or intelligence, but because in that moment the system cannot access the full range of who we are.The quality of our relationships is shaped, in real time, by the state of our nervous system. Research on vagal regulation, self-awareness, and interpersonal autonomic synchrony suggests that bodily regulation is tied not only to emotional regulation, but to social engagement and relationship functioning as well.And because relationships are one of the major conditions of health, this is not separate from wellbeing.It is part of it.

This is not a trait. It is a skill.

Most people assume they are either good under pressure or not.That is not accurate.With the right tools, regulation is trainable. What once felt hopeless or inevitable can become a place to practice, and that is deeply hopeful. Meta-analyses and broad reviews of somatic, autonomic and mindfulness-based interventions support the idea that regulation-related skills can be learned and can improve stress-related symptoms and functioning.The body can learn to recognize activation earlier, interrupt automatic reactions, return to baseline more efficiently, and choose a response instead of being driven by one.The goal is not to be calm all the time.The goal is to remain available to yourself when it matters.

The 30-second window

Change does not happen in theory. It happens in moments.In my work, I teach a short, repeatable sequence that can be done in under 30 seconds.Not to eliminate stress.To create space.A small gap between stimulus and response.In that gap, something becomes possible: one breath instead of immediate reaction, contact with the body instead of losing center, one clear question instead of escalation, one aligned action instead of reflex.It is simple.It is also where everything changes.

A lived example

I learned this the hard way.Growing up, my family moved almost every year. I was always the new kid. I learned to scan constantly: who belongs, who does not, how to fit in.That vigilance did not disappear when I got older. It just became more subtle.As an adult, even after decades in Northern California, I still found myself walking into rooms, parties, gatherings, even professional settings, and feeling like that same younger version of myself: slightly guarded, slightly performing, not quite at ease.Not because I believed I did not belong.Because my nervous system did not.Learning to work directly with that pattern, not just analyze it or talk it through, but shift it physiologically, changed something fundamental.Relaxation stopped being an idea.It became a skill.And once it became a skill, it became available.Now, when I walk into a room full of people I do not know, I am no longer only my scared ten-year-old self. I am my present adult self, practicing, softening, and staying.I still get shy. I still get overwhelmed.I just no longer have to let that part drive.

From individual to collective

When people learn how to regulate their nervous systems, the impact is immediate and practical.In families, there is less escalation, more repair, and greater stability for children.In workplaces, there is clearer thinking, better decision-making under pressure, and less burnout.In communities, there is more patience, more accountability, and less reactivity.This is not abstract.It is behavioral.And it scales. Research on social engagement, prosocial behavior, and interpersonal physiology supports the broader claim that regulation is not only personal; it affects how we relate, coordinate, and respond together.

A local application

This spring, I am teaching a four-week class, along with two evening online workshops this May, through the City of Fairfax Park & Recreation Department, built around these skills.The classes are structured, practical, and experiential. Participants learn a short, repeatable sequence they can use in conversation, in conflict, under pressure, and in real time.This is not group therapy.It is not about processing the past.It is about building capacity in the present.

The shift we are in

For a long time, we have defaulted to pathologizing people who lose their cool or disappear under pressure.Label the problem. Name the diagnosis. Assign the category.There is a place for that.But there is another truth emerging.Many people are not broken.They are undertrained.The question is beginning to shift.Not what is wrong with you?What skills were never taught?

The return of agency

When people understand how their nervous system works, and how to work with it, they regain something essential.Not control.Agency.They can feel activation without being taken over by it. They can pause without disappearing. They can stay in contact without escalating. They can become, in very real terms, more of who they already are.

Why this matters here

Marin is a high-functioning, high-demand place. People are navigating caregiving, parenting, aging, ambition, health concerns, and identity transitions while trying to stay engaged and capable.There is a strong culture of wellness here.There is also, quietly, a great deal of pressure.The opportunity is not only to reduce that pressure.It is to build the capacity to meet it differently.

Closing

The goal is not simply to eliminate stress.The goal is to stay connected to yourself while life is happening.Because that is the moment when wellbeing, communication, and choice come back online.
